Communities on the Move

Communities on the Move is a community-led effort in neighborhoods across North Carolina, addressing barriers to active living by building residents' capacity to become leaders and change agents and creating opportunities for healthy eating and physical activity. This initiative encompasses several separate but complementary projects, including: The Fairview Community Garden, Fairview Youth in Action Internship, Educational Workshops, and Women on the Move - All of which are working together to accomplish the goals and objectives as put forth in the Fairview Active Living Plan 2022-2027 referred to as the Activate! Plan. Read more about each of these below.

Women on the Move provides physical activity opportunities and nutrition classes for women of all ages in the Fairview neighborhood. This space has also allowed these participants to develop leadership and community organizing skills.

Activate! Fairview

The youth interns in the Fairview Youth in Action program have worked to promote active living in their neighborhood. Over the past four summers, high-schooled-aged Fairview residents assessed neighborhood barriers to healthier lifestyles through a series of mapping and assessment exercises, interviewed community stakeholders, and gained input from the wider community through outreach and advocacy events. The Fairview Youth in Action interns applied what they learned to create the Activate: Fairview Active Living Plan 2022-2027 (“Activate”). This youth-driven, community-engaged plan outlines goals, objectives, and recommendations to improve the neighborhood.

Walk Fairview Day Recap Video

In 2024, the Fairview Youth in Action interns hosted the 4th annual Walk Fairview event in Hillsborough, North Carolina. Over 75 individuals and families attended, as well as several community partner organizations and representatives from the local government, all to support efforts to make Fairview community a safer, healthier place to live!
