Fairview Park has long been an invaluable resource for the Fairview community, but more can be done to ensure all neighbors, especially the youth, have access to relevant amenities and opportunities to feel connected to the space. Pulling from the last couple of years of advocacy, as outlined in the Advocate! Plan, Edith (Fairview Youth in Action -FYIA Coordinator) & Nicole (2025 FYIA Intern) made a presentation to the Orange County Dept. of Environment, Agriculture & Parks & Recreation (OC DEAPR)'s advisory board on February 4th, 2025, giving actionable steps to make Fairview Park a more inclusive, accessible, and engaging space for all residents.
Proposed improvements include:
✅ Installing temporary soccer goals on the baseball field.
✅ Fixing playground and facility maintenance near Dorothy Johnson Community Center.
✅ Improving the shortcut connecting the park to the neighborhood.
Two weeks later, on February 17th, Kevin and Edith brought a a follow-up presentation to a joint Orange County - Town of Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meeting, with lots of support from both governments. These efforts are all part of the Activate! Fairview Active-Living Plan 2022-2027 roadmap, which was developed in 2022 and outlines Fairview’s vision for a safer, more active, and more vibrant community. Partners include the Fairview Community Watch, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC, and support from the local governments.
