Growing Together: A Visit to Freedom Org's Community Garden

Earlier this month, the FFORC team had the privilege of visiting Freedom Org, one of our garden partners. What we found was a thriving, multi-layered community space where food, learning, and connection grow side by side.

One of the most exciting developments at Freedom Org is the completion of their new washing station, a dedicated space where harvested produce can be cleaned, weighed, and tracked. This infrastructure is a meaningful step toward operational sustainability and data-informed growing practices.

Farm Demonstration Garden for Farmlympics

Freedom Org's farm demonstration garden is in full swing this summer, serving as an outdoor classroom for Farmlympics campers. Youth participants got their hands in the soil, learning to grow crops like squash and corn through direct, experiential engagement with the land. This kind of learning, rooted in practice and place, builds skills and relationships that last well beyond the growing season.

Community Plots in Full Bloom

The community garden plots were a sight to behold during our visit: blooming flowers and ripe, ready watermelons filled the space with color and life. Those watermelons were harvested and donated directly to the local food pantry, a reminder that this garden's abundance belongs to the whole community.

A Space for Learning, Gathering, and Growing

Freedom Org's garden holds many functions. It is a learning site where youth move through the full cycle of growing, developing stewardship and ecological awareness along the way. It is a creative space, beautified by the hand-painted signs and decorated rocks of the young people who call it theirs. It is also a gathering place, where community members come together to connect, to care for one another, and to invest in their collective health.

We left this visit grateful to walk alongside partners like Freedom Org who are making it happen every day. 🌱

Stay tuned for more garden partner updates!
