When asked about his reflection on the holiday, our colleague Reverend Kearney said, "African American history is American History, and we should celebrate our rich contributions to this great nation every day of the year."
Reverend Kearney mentioned has adopted the symbolism of the Sankofa bird in his life and work as a reminder of this rich cultural history.
Originating from the Akan people of Ghana in Africa, the Sankofa bird is an important symbol in African-American and African Diaspora contexts. The bird reminds us that, to understand our present, we must look back to the roots of past experience and history in order to move forward into a positive future. It is a symbol of hope, strength, learning and determination.
Reverend Kearney continued, "We have to reconcile the past, honor our ancestors, and bring forth the knowledge & wisdom from the past as we empower the next generation for a better future."
Honoring Black History Month recognizes Black Americans' vital contributions, resilience, and cultural impact throughout U.S. history while promoting education, reflection, and progress. Let's celebrate together, this month and every month!
