Hello UNC FFORC partners, neighbors, and friends,
We’re writing with an important update about our funding and how it impacts the work we do together ~
On July 4th, the President signed into law the federal budget bill (known as the “Big Beautiful Bill”), which includes the elimination of funding for SNAP-Ed. UNC FFORC has received SNAP-Ed funding for 15 years and depended on this funding to support vital community-driven initiatives, including:
Healthy eating projects like our community gardens and it’s participatory grantmaking process
Culturally tailored programs through Golden Journeys and Diversity Nurtures Achievement
Active living efforts such as Communities on the Move, Fairview Youth in Action, Women on the Move, and active transportation activities
Support for local food systems and farmers markets
We are devastated by this news as this decision puts the future of these programs at risk.
What Will Happen Without SNAP-Ed Funding?
Right now, we have funding to operate our current programs through September 30, 2025.
We are focused on finishing out this year strong while also planning for the future and exploring alternative ways to sustain this important work. Together with our partners, we are actively seeking new funding opportunities to sustain what we can, but filling the funding gap left by SNAP-Ed will be impossible.
While the funding uncertainty remains, we also recognize that we may lose valued team members to other opportunities in the months ahead.
We want to be realistic, however, that it is going to be impossible to continue all of our programming and funding all of our partners at the level that SNAP-Ed funding has allowed us to.
We are proud of the work we have done together, over the years, to improve the lives of North Carolinians. We couldn’t have accomplished all of this without our partners. Thank you.
We are grateful to the local news outlets that shared articles about the harm this federal legislation will have on communities, health, and economies. You can read these articles using the links below:

We are strongly committed to keeping our healthy living initiatives going. We will do everything we can to support our neighbors and communities.
It’s important, now more than ever, to work toward creating healthy, active, and connected communities. We know that SNAP-Ed makes North Carolina healthier. We are proud of the work we have done and the lives we have changed for the better.
In solidarity,
~ the UNC FFORC team
