FFORC In The Classroom!

Writer: HPDP FFORCHPDP FFORC

UNC Chapel Hill, October 15, 2024

Yesterday, our FFORC Director, Molly De Marco, and our Communities on the Move Project Manager, Judit, were guest lecturers during a UNC HBEH730: Theoretical Foundations of Health Behavior class, which provides students an overview of social and behavioral science theories and frameworks that are currently used to 1) understand health-related behaviors; and 2) guide the development of interventions and policies designed to prevent, reduce or eliminate major public health problems. Molly and Judit discussed the built environment, including the physical structures and infrastructure of a community, as a critical social determinant of health for individuals and communities that significantly influences health outcomes by affecting access to resources, opportunities for physical activity, and exposure to environmental hazards.

Below are images of the student activity on power analysis when doing community organizing around public health issues. Molly's sister, Allison, faculty at the UNC School of Social Work, talked about organizing for dignified, accessible public restrooms in downtown Chapel Hill.
