🚶‍♀️A Walk Worth Fighting For: Fairview Youth Lead Amid Uncertain Funding

On August 9, Fairview Youth in Action hosted the fifth-annual Walk Fairview Day—a powerful celebration of community and youth leadership. More than 70 neighbors and local officials participated, including Hillsborough Mayor Mark Bell, Mayor Pro Tempore Robb English, Town Manager Eric Peterson, and Assistant Town Manager and Community Services Director Matt Efird. We were also honored to welcome State Representative Renee Price and Orange County Commissioners Phyllis Portie-Ascott, Jamezetta Bedford, Marilyn Carter, and Jean Hamilton. Together, they joined youth for a guided walk and pop-up art demonstration to reimagine Fairview as a healthier, more vibrant place to live. We also thank the Hillsborough police for safely guiding us during the walk.

Youth interns spotlighted real wins—like new speed bumps, stop signs, and a community kitchen—and shared bold ideas from the Activate! Fairview Plan to bring more public art, inclusive parks, and healthy food access to our community. The event also featured a 1-mile guided walk with pop-up demonstrations, tabling and resources from local organizations, and more.

We want to thank the partners like Habitat for Humanity, El Centro Hispano, Alliance for Historic Hillsborough, Voter Registration, Orange County Parks and Recreation Town of Hillsborough Stormwater and Environmental Services and their Communications Department, the Fairview Community Watch for providing free school supplies, and PORCH - Hillsborough, who joined us during the event and shared valuable information with our neighbors.

But here’s what's happening: this incredible youth-led program is at risk. SNAP-ed funding cuts in recent legislation threaten its future.

📚Fairview’s New Little Free Library Is Here!

Fairview’s newest Little Free Library is officially open—and it all started with a powerful idea from Stephanie Montaño, a 2024 graduate of the Fairview Youth in Action Program. As an active youth leader in the community, Stephanie envisioned a space where neighbors could share books, stories, and connection. She presented her idea to the community and worked tirelessly to bring it to life—partnering with friends, family, neighbors, and local organizations to install the Little Free Library at the Dorothy N. Johnson Community Center.

Thanks to her vision and collaboration, Fairview now has a vibrant new hub for literacy and community exchange.

🚶‍♀️Una caminata que vale la pena defender: Jóvenes de Fairview lideran frente a un futuro incierto

El 9 de agosto, Fairview Youth in Action organizó el quinto evento anual Walk Fairview Day—una poderosa celebración de la comunidad y el liderazgo juvenil. Más de 70 vecinos y funcionarios locales participaron, incluyendo al alcalde de Hillsborough Mark Bell, el alcalde suplente Robb English, el administrador municipal Eric Peterson y el subadministrador y director de servicios comunitarios Matt Efird. Como joven líder activa en la comunidad, Stephanie imaginó un espacio donde los vecinos pudieran compartir libros, historias y conexiones. Presentó su idea ante la comunidad y trabajó incansablemente para hacerla realidad—colaborando con amistades, familiares, vecinos y organizaciones locales para instalar la biblioteca en el Centro Comunitario Dorothy N.
