🍽️ Celebrating Black History Month Through Food!
Food brings us all together, and certain foods can evoke memories of family, laughter, and love, smells, sights, and sounds directly tied to our shared cultural memories.
Black history is in the food we eat! Okra, black-eyed peas, rice, and yams all come from African American food traditions. These foods have been passed down for generations, telling stories of strength, creativity, and community.
This #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate the farmers, chefs, and families who keep these traditions alive. We can honor Black history by purchasing foods from local farmers, restaurants, and grocery stores.
Collard greens are an important part of Black history. They came to the U.S. from African food traditions. Enslaved Africans cooked them with smoked meat to make them tasty and filling. Today, people still enjoy collard greens at family meals and celebrations. They remind us of strength, culture, and community.
