Food for Thought: Fun on the Farm Camp Wraps Up Week One

Last week, campers at the Food for Thought Fun on the Farm camp completed the first of two exciting weeks together on the farm! This camp offers nutrition education and hands-on access to fresh food for youth ages 5–14 in the Warren County area, and it wouldn't be possible without the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies, organizations, and individuals, including 4-H, Place-N-the Country Farm, and other local partners who provided educational materials and led hands-on activities throughout the week.

What Campers Learned and Did

Campers kicked off the camp with a wide range of engaging, hands-on experiences:

🌿 Planting a vegetable of their choice, giving each camper ownership over something they'll watch grow throughout the summer

🎨 Arts and crafts that added a creative, fun element to the day

🍄 Learning how shiitake mushrooms are grown, a hands-on lesson in a less-familiar area of food cultivation

🥗 Making nutritious snack recipes, helping campers build skills to fuel their bodies as "future farmers"

Physical activity, keeping the days active and energizing

One of the week's highlights was a visit from Virginia State University's Mobile Ag Bus, which brought interactive agricultural learning right to the camp venue for the day. Campers also learned the steps involved in planting seed starts, building foundational gardening skills they can carry with them well beyond camp.

Looking Ahead

Week one was just the beginning! Stay tuned for updates on all the happenings from week two, coming later this July.
