Food for Thought Wraps Up Week Two

Camp in Warren County continued its momentum into the second week, transitioning from Fun on the Farm to Food for Thought. Building on what they learned the week prior, youth explored food purchasing and budgeting alongside various forms of food cultivation and preparation.

What Campers Learned and Did

This week's activities gave campers a hands-on look at where their food comes from and how to make it stretch further at home:

  • Sourdough and focaccia baking, where campers learned the process of feeding their "camp pet" sourdough starter and turning it into fresh-baked focaccia bread 🥖

  • A cooking and tasting class, facilitated by Slice 325 👩🏻‍🍳

  • Co-opoly, a game teaching campers about the structure and function of grocery store co-ops 🛒

  • Taco bowl spice blending, where campers learned about the nutritional and culinary impact of spices 🌮

  • A visit with chickens and ducks from Cooperative Extension 🐔🦆

  • STEM activities, adding a hands-on science and technology component to the week 🔬

  • A special visit from Congressman Don Davis 🎤

  • Field trips to the Vance County Farmer's Market, sampling local produce like cucumbers, plums, and peaches, plus a visit to a local blueberry farm 🚌 🍑🫐

  • Physical activities to keep minds and bodies active throughout the day 👟

Needless to say, there was no question if stomachs were full at the end of each day! Camp culminated in a trip to the Warren County Farmer's Market, where campers put their budgeting and grocery shopping skills into practice using SNAP Double Bucks, purchasing foods to bring home and share with their households. 💰

A huge thank you to all of our partners, most notably 4-H, for making this camp possible and giving Warren County youth two weeks of meaningful, hands-on learning about food, farming, and community.
