Unearthing Stories: A Facilitated Workshop at the NC Community Food Gathering

FFORC | September 23, 2025

Our team was honored to have Rev. William Kearney, along with student researchers James and Victoria, lead a workshop titled “Unearthing Stories, Cultivating Change: Community-Based Participatory Research for Food Justice Advocacy” at this year’s NC Community Food Gathering.

Around 25 participants joined the session, breaking into small groups to reflect on and share food-related memories that felt like “home.” The energy was powerful—participants eagerly exchanged stories, and one group even shared with the larger room that they had swapped numbers and planned to stay in touch. We hope attendees left with a deeper appreciation for the role of storytelling in shifting power and advancing food justice.

Hosted by Community Food Strategies, this statewide conference convenes food system stakeholders to strategize, learn, and collaborate on building a more resilient and equitable food system. This year’s theme, “Transformational Community: A Way Forward,” provided the backdrop for two days of dialogue, skill-building, and collective visioning.

The featured poster artwork was created by A Visual Approach, a woman-founded firm based in Durham, NC, that specializes in graphic recording, group facilitation, and strategic illustration.
